FROM PHOTO TO PAINTING

Once I know the shade of an animals fur I can begin to experiment with background colours and textures that lift the portrait.

IMG_7443.jpeg

FUJI PHOTO

The original photo had faded and the colour of Fuji's fur looked unatural...also the background a dark grey did not compliment his colouring.

FUJI PAINTING

I chose shades of green instead of grey which lifted the image.

NINA

My own dog (but very much her own dog!) Not camera shy so a good subject :))

NINA

Easy to connect to my own dog because I know her so well. but the longer I sit with a new image of an animal the more it's soul and character begins to speak to me.

From Photo to Painting

It's not always possible to have an "ideal" photo to work from, that is where it's important to really focus and go back to basics understanding form and how and where the light falls.

Maiya Photo

Not the best photo of the cat, so I focused more on the love Maiya had for her cat.

Maiya Painting

Changing the background gave a nice contrast with Maiya,s shiny blonde hair.

Susan Photo

Karen told me Susan didn't like the camera so there were few photos to choose from, we decided on this one because it was a memorable happy moment.

Susan Painting

Was tricky painting Susan with glasses but I think I managed to capture her joy from the photo.
